Think You Know Your Tequila? Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos Puts You to the Test

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos in Mexico

Many of us have that one friend who claims to know anything and everything about a certain type of spirit, be it that dude who collects (but never opens and/or shares) expensive bottles of bourbon or your favorite beer snob, who lectures the whole table on his favorite IPA while everyone else would kill for a Coors Light right about now. Sometimes they’re very insightful and a lot of times they’re full of it, but every now and then, you might learn important tips or maybe even discover a new favorite bottle. So, what’s stopping you from being that person?

Any great Mexican resort offers some type of activity based on tequila (or mezcal, if you’re very lucky) and the best experiences will teach you not only about the spirit’s deep history, but also how to identify the different types and understand the best ways to drink them all. If you’re hoping to head to the Pacific side of the country for a thrilling golf escape, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is a magnificent, luxurious all-inclusive base that not only sets you near the heart of Cabo, but it also boasts a Tequila Connoisseur Certification program that will ensure you’re the smartest person at the table in your favorite local Mexican joints.

Over three days, participants will learn everything they need to know about blanco, reposado, and añejo tequilas, from the history to the best pairings for each type — bring an appetite, because there will be plenty of food to enjoy. Day one focuses on the history, while day two offers rich insight into the barrel-aging process, so you can understand the crucial aspects that set reposados and añejos apart, all while (hopefully) learning why the latter should never ever be used to make a margarita. Unless that’s your thing, of course.

Finally, the third day features the really cool stuff; specifically the extra añejos that are made in various types of barrels previously used for other spirits. Once you have tequila aged in a bourbon barrel, you might not ever touch the regular stuff again. (I highly recommend the affordable and delicious MB Roland Kentucky Azul.)

The experience costs $1,900 per couple, but the activities of the first two days are available for anyone crunched for time or merely curious about the basics. However, only guests who partake in all three days will achieve certification, and every golfer knows that bragging rights are ultimately priceless and require some sort of paper proof. Otherwise, just like that eagle you hit at Torrey Pines last year, it totally never happened, bro.

The other great thing about Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is that it’s set between a pair of ideal courses: the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed Cabo Real and the highly regarded Tom Fazio effort at Chileno Bay. It’s especially important to note that golf is never “cheap” in Los Cabos, so if you want to swing big, my personal recommendation is always Quivira. However, if you’re mostly focused on bringing back tall tales of tequila and tee times, then you’ll want to play them all.
