Hole 15 at Atlantic Dunes in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Nobody really needs a reason to plan a vacation to Hilton Head, as the beloved South Carolina destination has long been a favorite among almost every type of traveler. Of course, as much as budget-minded families love this East Coast destination, there might not be anyone who loves it as much as golfers who want as much action as possible in a limited time window. And that’s probably why The Sea Pines Resort came up with its smartest, most convenient offering.

The Love-Dye Golf Package allows guests to play two of the best courses in the state: Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point. The former was designed by Davis Love III and the latter by Pete Dye, hence the very obvious name of the deal. Combined with the exceptional array of accommodations — home and villa rentals for small groups and families or rooms and suites at The Inn & Club at Harbour Town — this is a very simple way to plan one of the best vacations of your year. Hell, maybe even your lifetime if you don’t make it to Hilton Head that often.

Formerly the Ocean Course, Atlantic Dunes is as much a piece of regional history as it is a fun, challenging concept. This is the original course at The Sea Pines Resort, renovated by Love to be more challenging while never taking away from the surrounding natural beauty. No matter which box you’re teeing off from, this is a thinking player’s course, as it requires a little planning in lieu of the casual player’s mantra of “Let ‘er rip!”

One of the things I love most about playing Southern courses is how they’re often designed to feel like natural tours. Heron Point is a perfect example, with the first hole having a magical feel to it, as if Dye was telling golfers that this is going to be an occasionally frustrating journey through the natural elements that make South Carolina so special. Many of us will be mesmerized by the way the trees frame many of these holes, but don’t get too caught up in the scenery — because you sure as heck don’t want to be missing fairways and hitting from the deep stuff.

Obviously, no trip would be complete without hitting the trifecta; however, Harbour Town Golf Links is closed until November 2025. That’ll be well worth the wait, though, and the Love-Dye Golf Package should be more than enough fun for everyone. And families that golf together should also consider the Junior Golf experience, as players under 17 receive 50 percent discounts off adult rates.
